Fiction Fridays: The Twilght Series
Posted on the 16 December 2011 by ShawndrarussellI know that this topic has been beat to death, but I felt it was appropriate to talk about since Monday I will be posting my review of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. I know that there are a lot of haters when it comes to Stephanie Meyer's series--the teenagers are oversexed, the guys are objectified (and Bella Swan too especially in the last book), it's too cutesy, whatever.
But the reality is, Meyer's series started a worldwide phenomenon, and she got millions of tweens and teens (and let's face it, adults) excited about reading. ANYTIME people are excited about reading, it's a good thing.
Here are a list of other "good things" about the Twilight series:
Edward Cullen believes in abstinence until marriage (albeit because he is afraid of killing her, but also because of his moral code and old-fashioned beliefs).
The slightly awkward, un-Barbie girls gets the guys.
Meyer's creates great tension between characters and maintains a sense of urgency throughout the series.
The themes of friendship, coming of age, and identity encourage readers to live with purpose.
The vampire and werewolf "mate for life" philosophy encourage the audience to value finding true love instead of being promiscuous.
You of course may violently disagree with me, but the fact is, any writer would love for their books to be loved, hated, and discussed as much as Meyer's stories.
