The power of words is undeniable. They can tear down, build up, stupefy, and educate. In year’s past, I’ve marveled as some questionable choices made at year’s end concerning the defining dictionary entry of the past 365. This year, I have to tip my hat to Merriam Webster, and they didn’t even choose a word. In its place, a suffix…

—ism. As in feminism, racism, terrorism. For better and worse it’s been a year full of “isms.”

Personally, I’m a fan of the more philosophical “isms”—existentialism and pragmatism to name a few.

Regardless, I hope this is a sign that we’re not all simply looking for definitions, but answers to the difficult questions behind these searches.

Here’s hoping 2016 brings us witticisms and understanding(ism).
