Well folks, the day has come, the nominees have been set, there’s no turning back now.
I for one am choosing to see the positive (and not the two empty slots for best picture nominations). Sure, I could dwell on the fact that five out of the eight nominees are male-driven stories, but I will instead take heart in the three female-driven ones (there are far more harmful male to female ratios out there to worry about).
What’s probably more concerning is that the Academy might as well have written Chris Rock’s opening monolog for him. I mean really, (incredibly white) guys? Maybe he won’t notice…
So, here’s the bright side:
- I am already three-eighths of the way through seeing all of the best picture nominated films (yay!).
- Three-tenths of the way through best actress/actor nominated films, and if that were a goal of mine I would be thrilled (yay!).
- Math’s role in our modern world is alive and well, and being used by the Academy to deprive us of two best picture nominees (yay math!).
- “Inside Out” was nominated, which is not surprising at all, but I needed a fourth point, and really wanted to include the following GIF (yay!).
Despite my snark, and some lingering, obvious flaws in the system, I’m actually quite excited about the cinematic challenge ahead: 5 movies, 6 weeks, piece of cake. …and action!
