For Carnival I Was Josephine Baker!- ¡Para Carnaval Yo Fui Josefina Baker!

 

ENG. Last week I went to a carnival party and I had to dress up as Josephine Baker! I love carnival and I love dressing up so when they told me I had to be someone in particular I was thrilled.  Also, because I had recently watched Midnight in Paris, I was very much in the mood of the 20’s!

To tell you the truth, I was also a bit embarrassed that I didn't know her very well. I knew she sung and danced, but that was pretty much it. So since I wanted to really get into character I started to investigate more, and what wonderful things I found! Josephine was a strong successful woman. She was born in the US but then adopted the French citizenship. She was an actress, a singer and a dancer (known also by her banana dance) and the first African American woman to star in a major motion picture and to integrate an American concert hall. She was a beautiful, confident, irreverent, outrageous, simply alive, way ahead of her time woman, who could make fun or herself and of society itself.  She also contributed to the Civil Rights movement and worked as an informant for the French resistance during World War II. Her nicknames were the “Bronze Venus” the “Black Pearl" and the “Creole Goddess” in simple words she was simply a fantastic woman! Also a great discovery after talking to my mom is that she had 12 children through adoption and one of them was from a small Colombian town called Puerto Tejada, my mom’s town! And what a surprise when I found out that my mom met her when she was a kid!

So I definitely felt much honored to be Josephine Baker this carnival!

ESP. La semana pasada fui a una fiesta de carnaval donde me tuve que vestir como Josefina Baker. Yo adoro carnaval y me encanta disfrazarme, entonces cuando me dijeron que tenía que ser una persona en particular estaba súper emocionada. Especialmente porque recientemente vi la película Midnight in Paris y pues quedé totalmente en la atmósfera de los años 20.

Si tengo que decir la verdad, no sabía mucho sobre ella, de lo cual me siento un tanto avergonzada. Sólo sabía que había vivido en los años 20 y que cantaba y bailaba. Entonces como quería representar bien el personaje empecé a investigar más sobre ella ¡y que cosas tan maravillosas encontré!  Josefina Baker era una mujer fuerte y exitosa. Ella nació en Estados Unidos pero adoptó la ciudadanía francesa. Ella era actriz, cantante y bailarina (muy reconocida por su baile del banano), ella fue la primera mujer Afro Americana que actuó como principal en una película y que participó en un concierto mixto en Estados Unidos. Era hermosa, segura de sí misma, irreverente, fuera de lo común, simplemente viva, súper innovadora y avanzada para su época, que sabía reírse de sí misma y de la sociedad. Ella contribuyó al movimiento de los derechos civiles de los Afro Americanos y trabajó como informante para la resistencia francesa durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Algunos de sus apodos eran “la Venus de Bronce”,  “la Perla Negra” y “la Diosa criolla”, en simples palabras era una mujer fantástica.  También otro gran descubrimiento fue cuando le comenté de mi disfraz a mi mamá y aprendí que Josefina Baker tuvo 12 hijos adaptados, uno de los cuales era Colombiano y venía de un pequeño pueblo en Colombia que se llama Puerto Tejada, ¡el pueblo donde nació mi mamá! Y qué sorpresa cuando me di cuenta que mi mamá la conoció cuando era pequeña.

¡Entonces fue un gran honor ser Josefina Baker para carnaval!
