It’s the first Flick Friday of October, and you know what that means? It’s the perfect excuse to share my favorite Halloween movies.
First, a distinction, scary movies and Halloween movies are not one in the same. Would I categorize scary movies as acceptable Halloween entertainment? Probably, but the world of Halloween films spans far beyond bone-chilling horror. Call me a wuss if you must, but I like my scary movies with a side of intellect, explanation, and humor.
So, let’s kick things off with the Sanderson Sisters and “Hocus Pocus.” Any good 90s kid knows it’s not Halloween without a couple dozen viewings of this critically panned cult classic. Just like “Newsies,” the millennials have kept this under-appreciated gem alive and running at least every few hours on ABC Family throughout October. You’re welcome, world.
Speaking of “Newsies,” lets continue with another Bill Pullman classic…”Casper.” Bringing the friendly ghost to the big screen could have been a cheesy disaster (and each and every sequel has been a harsh reminder of that), but the original was an incredibly careful (just the right amount of corny at times) and touching tribute to this classic character:
And while we’re on the subject of Christina Ricci, I can’t finish this (anything but exhaustive…I love Halloween movies) list without including some “Addams Family Values.” I love the first movie, but this second installment will always hold a special place in my heart:
