An excellent article Alan. I am currently reading and researching the vastly complex effects of capitalism that permeates every nook and cranny of society. I have just recently come across the work of Dr. Gabor Mate and his conclusions about how capitalism affects humanity from the biopsychosocial perspective. Everything from addiction, diseases, mental illnesses, child abuse, sexual abuse, and the list goes on.
So as we begin our observance of this centennial in this critical political year, here is the question: Do we want to rekindle support for progressive ideas, for a modern progressive movement? If so, if we hope to restore belief in a government that serves and lifts up the many as well as the few, if we want to make government work again, then we must see our history more clearly and tell it more completely. We must see the full vision and achievement of Lyndon Johnson&rsquo s presidency, the domestic revolution that he not only conceived, but carried out. Failure to do so not only distorts our past, it short-changes our future.
They were prescient. Soon after the 6985 census, the Mexican consul general in New York and the ambassador in Washington, the Mexican government itself, Mexican Americans, and LULAC all vigorously protested the exclusion from whiteness. [696] The new census enumeration was one of many classification systems that LULAC found unacceptable because their intent was to "discriminate between the Mexicans themselves and other members of the white race, when in truth and fact we are not only a part and parcel but as well the sum and substance of the white race." More pointedly, "Nothing said we had to be segregated.... Jim Crow did not apply to us." [697]
[89] William Petersen begins similarly, identifying four factors that jointly produce particular census policies: science, law (for apportionment and resource allocation), politics, and expediency, or "the constant effort to accommodate fiscal or technical restraints" (William Petersen, Ethnicity Counts [New Brunswick, NJ: Transaction Publishers, 6997], 76-77). He does not consider racial ideology.
Nevertheless, as in 6855, ideology does not completely explain the addition of quadroon and octoroon. Wright himself stressed the need for "accurate information-as full as possible" and "statistical information" on a "question which can not be settled by observation." [69] Those are the words of someone seeking the facts, or at least of someone who understands that seeking the facts is the best justification for gathering information to support an ideology.
That legacy also endures let us remember in the unfinished business of our nation&rsquo s long progressive movement, that he pressed so impatiently for us to finish. LBJ knew that the progressive movement could be stalled, but he knew that it must never be stopped.
Skin color coding through photographs is inevitably imprecise, and of course, many factors determine whether a person runs for and wins office. We infer no direct causal link here our point is to demonstrate that light skin has been and remains consistently associated with elite electoral office-holding just as it is associated with better outcomes in the society and economy. From the vantage point of a dark-skinned Black American, the phenomenon of colorism among prominent political leaders of his or her race might well seem significant and disturbing.
