Friday Style: Denim Love

Hello, friends, and happy Friday! There are not words for how happy I am to see this Friday come around. Even though a lot of the things that have happened this week have been good things, it’s still been a draining week, and I’m looking forward to enjoying some downtime this weekend. Granted, that downtime will probably consists of running, hiking, yard work, and working on the house, and maybe catching a Home Depot workshop, but those things are what I need to recharge.

I do have some fun out-and-about events next week to plan for, though, so as I’m going through my closet, once again looking for ways to downsize my wardrobe {I still don’t understand how, after so many trips to Goodwill, I still have so much stuff!!} I’m taking a look at how to better use and incorporate the things I really like. Take my white denim shorts, for example. Wait…she said white denim? Yeah, I know, it’s a shock to me, too. I never thought I would even dare try on anything in white denim, let alone fall in love with it. But they’re perfect for outings here in aloha-land, perfect to dress up or dress down as the occasion calls for. Here’s one of my ideas for using them in an out-and-about outfit:

There are lots of apps out there that will let you mix and match and preview outfits made up of things you actually own – I’ve tried them, and the ones I’ve tried have been a pain to get started with. They might be great if you actually have time to upload everything you own into an app, but…yeah, not me. Instead, I keep turning to my old friend Polyvore. Seriously, it’s hard to go wrong. And if you can’t find exactly what you have, you can piece together an outfit with similar items, like the one I put together above.

Sometimes I still do like putting together artistic outfits and glamourous outfits, but more and more, I’m getting a little bit impatient with those. I know I’m never actually going to buy those things. I know I’m never actually going to wear those things. And if I did, frankly, they’re just not made for me or for someone shaped like me.

One of the reasons I’ve moved away from the straight up style and fashion wish list posts is that the way I was writing them before wasn’t genuine, no matter how much I tried to make it genuine. Did I think the outfits I designed were fun, fashionable, artistic, and so forth? At first, sure. But they weren’t me. No matter how much I wanted them to be, they weren’t me. They didn’t fit me or my lifestyle, and I just couldn’t find ways to connect with them.

I love fashion, don’t get me wrong. But more than I’m loving designing clothes, I’m loving figuring out new ways to get the most out of my wardrobe. But instead of being a wanna-be style blogger and a blogger who pulls out all this fantastic fashion that I really don’t think even they would wear, I’m sticking closer to me. And I’m learning a lot about myself in the process, about what I like and how I see myself and what works and what doesn’t.

That’s a lot of introspection to get out of an outfit post, isn’t it? Whoo.

This is how it turned out on me. Another nice casual but not too casual everyday me outfit. So for those of you out there who are, like I was, dead set against white denim, I won’t try to make you a convert. But it is really a nice way to brighten up an outfit and I think it looks more polished than regular denim. The shirt gives you all those denim tones right back anyway!

Now because I’m missing all the fall fashion fun, I’m heading over to Alison’s blog, {long distance loving} for the weekly Friday’s Fancies link-up. They’re all taking a break from the high fashion today and looking at fun things to sport for game day – because even if you’re not a huge football fan {not an issue in my family, we all love the fooze-ball} what’s not to love about healthy competition, good food, a couple of cold ones, and time spent with great friends? We’ve got a couple UH games on the calendar ourselves, and can’t wait to get out there and cheer!
