There’s been an electronic invasion, in recent years, of the fitness world. From GPS watches that help you track how far you’ve run, to bands that track your heart rate and even your sleep patterns.
If you haven’t noticed this onslaught of smart gear you will soon. Nike, Skechers, Samsung, and Fitbit all have their own activity-tracking devices, and Google will soon be adding to that list.
While I am a fan of being active, and any tools that may help people in their pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, tracking every detail of our day doesn’t sound like a healthy lifestyle. It sounds more like an obsession.
While some people for various medical reasons, need this kind of tracking, this obsession is quickly becoming an epidemic beyond and has spread beyond the realm of medical necessity.
These smart devices quantify every aspect of our lives. Shouldn’t exercise be about how you feel, not how many steps you took or calories you burned? It seems to me that instead of fixing a problem, they’re creating another.
