...pink, purple, and bunnies!!!
“For Girls,” is a phrase that in the world of marketing and children’s products usually translates (roughly) to “Available in Pink” and/or “Complete with Hearts and Bunnies.” LEGO’s new”girl-friendly” collection–LEGO Friends–appears to be no exception.
In a recent attempt to pander to…I mean include…girls in the wonderful world of LEGO, this maker of models and tiny men (and women) with removable hair and heads, has created a separate (and less than equally pastel) world that they hope will appeal more to children of the female persuasion.
Although why they saw a need to designate sets specifically for girls is beyond me. They already have Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter.
Mia, Andrea, Emma, Olivia, and Stephanie (don’t get me started…she loves planning parties and her bunny, Daisy) make up the group of LEGO Friends, and the fun doesn’t stop there. You can go online and have even more fun with your LEGO Friends.
If light sabers and magic wands couldn’t do it, I’m not so sure that pastel bricks and easy (I daresay easier) to assemble pet mobiles, convertibles, and (because girls are smart too) inventor’s workshops (nice save LEGO) are going to do the trick.
This recent move seems more likely to insult many of their current female fans, rather than bring new ones in. The sets “for boys” are complex and inventive, they require patience and focus. LEGO Friends requires accessories.
I hate to put down an attempt at being inclusive, and I don’t deny that there are plenty of little girls out there who will absolutely adore this product, but did it have to be so pink?
