Happy Read a Book Day! This is the kind of holiday that I could (and usually do) celebrate every day.
Is there anything better than getting lost in a good book? Obviously the answer to that question is completely subjective, but for the purposes of celebrating the powers of reading let’s go with the simpler answer — no.
It’s kind of amazing what can happen when you combine a few words on a printed (or digital) page with the human imagination. You can find yourself transported to a new world. You can learn about new things, people, and places. You can see the world from a different point-of-view.
Books have amazing powers that stretch beyond our personal relationships with the stories bound in between their covers. They can change minds and in some cases change the world or at least some world views. If that seems a bit hyperbolic, then may I direct your attention to one of many banned books lists: Banned Books that Shaped America.
Books are powerful, and while Read a Book Day may seem like any other random holiday, its impact stretches beyond merely encouraging you to read today. Much like an unread book, it’s brimming with possibilities.
So, whether you revisit an old favorite or discover a new literary treasure, take some time to celebrate the holiday and read a book.
