Well nerds, it's the beginning of the end for another series. This week saw the premiere of the third and final season of FX's "Legion."
2019's latest victim is a relative newcomer with only two half seasons (and one to go), but it's spent its time wisely. During its few chapters, viewers have experienced quite the wildly psychedelic ride through the X-Men corner of the Marvel Universe.
Fair warning to those who like their X-Men with a heavy dose of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine (I was always more of a Magneto fan, but to each their own) this is a very different group of mutants. Although, there is a fair amount of brooding, so maybe it's not that different.
The series centers around David Haller / Legion, played by Dan Stevens, as he figures out his own powers and then uses them to save the world...sort of. You know, standard comic book, superhero, mutant stuff. Where it deviates is in how it tells the story. Basically, it's a total mind f...well, let's just say it's trippy.
When I say this show is trippy, know that it's only because there aren't quite the right combination of words to describe what "Legion" is. It's Greek mythology meets Alice in Wonderland with a little bit of ancient Egypt thrown in just for fun. It's a romance, of the epic, star-crossed variety. It's a lesson in psychology and philosophy. It's an exploration of the human mind. It's a discussion on mental health. There's time travel. It's even a musical and has one heck of a soundtrack and score. It is everything.
If you're still not sold yet, you should also know that it is a masterclass in acting. I mean, you know it's going to be good when Bill Irwin and Jean Smart are supporting characters. Side note (and minor spoiler alert), Mr. Irwin running from the Minotaur might be the greatest thing I've ever seen on television.
If you're woefully behind on the series, I have some good news. "Legion" is a show that benefits from binge viewing. You have to give it your complete attention, and even then you may find that you miss something and lose your way. But I promise you'll find your way back. It's a show that clearly knows where it's going, which means you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the mind-bending journey.
