Grab Some Comfort Food, We’re About to Cry.

Posted on the 01 May 2013 by Rarasaur @rarasaur

I was going to write a big long post for this week’s Prompts for the Promptless about all the small things I miss.

  • How delicious it was to chew ice when I was anemic, and how I almost miss that satisfaction enough to skip my iron pills once in a while.
  • How much I loved shopping for shoes when they lit up and had cartoons on them.
  • How I wish I could watch some of my favorite movies, or read some of my favorite books again, for the very first time.

But then I read this week’s submissions from everyone else– and they blew me away.  There is a cartoon saga of the days of pagers, and stories of friends lost.  There are memories of beloved pets, and dreams of future freedoms.  Every post has perfectly captured the pang of yesterday, and the joy in the memory of times past– and every single post will make you laugh, or cry, or both.

I was going to write a post, but the ones written here encapsulate everything.  So instead I will simply suggest that you serve up a bowl of your favorite comfort food, read as many of these as you can, and let yourself share in their saudade.

Saudade is a Portuguese word that describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something/someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing will never return.

It’s an emotional ride, but remember– we’re on it together.

What is your comfort food of choice?  Would you buy light-up shoes for adults if they sold them in stores?
