…Grin and Bear It

Capital BuildingThis Tuesday will mark the two-week anniversary of the current government shutdown. Mazel tov…

As the stalemate stretches on, closer and closer to the debt ceiling deadline, our patience is wearing thin. Many Americans are dumbfounded that our elected representatives can’t pull it together. We’re tearing our hair out as the political theater continues to behave like ill-mannered children. Our moods concerning the matter are anything but sunny.

The same goes for members of Congress. I know, given their usual cheery dispositions when it comes to negotiating (the fact that this word is applicable is tragic) between parties it’s shocking. Still, apparently nearly two weeks of being shutdown is making Congress crabby.

It would be easy to mock the strained nerves of these men and women who are simply not doing their jobs. We could easily list many reasons why they need to get over it, but we are not completely heartless here at the 2WC.  Rumor has it that politicians have feelings too.

So, instead we thought we’d provide some tips for alleviating the emotional wear and tear of serving on the nation’s foremost governing body during the shutdown.

Hope this lightens the mood, Congress:

  1. Meditation—When was the last time you took some “me” time, and filibustering does not count. Take a moment to reflect on all you’ve accomplished, probably in life. Reflecting on your accomplishments in Congress would be too brief.
  2. Physical Activity—If dodging the issues and slinging insults at the other party counted as cardio you’d all be set.
  3. Tea—preferably while sitting and talking with the other members of Congress about actually solving this problem. you may have to listen too. Draw on those multi-tasking skills.
