After a little bit of panic, I remembered the cool IKEA hacks I saw volunteering at Dwell with Dignity and realized this could be a dresser breakdown or a creative breakthrough. If I couldn't fit my first love, I would hack my Malm into the next best thing.
Thankfully my nights working on this were perfect hacking weather, so Little Child and I slathered on the lemongrass bug spray and spent a few nights on the patio power sanding the front drawers of the Malm. I did a few rounds of sanding so it was coarse enough to take the paint, but used a fine grit to not rip through the top layer and get into the particle board.
The two biggest dogs in my fight against the drab drawers were:
- The special bonding primer I used that sticks really well to vinyl and plastics and took perfectly to the drawers even when I didn't sand through the varnish completely
- The rollers I used that were a really high quality foam and distributed the paint really evenly and without any traces left behind
Unfortunately, my assistant also got a good douse of (VOC free, water soluble) paint.
I dressed up the bottom drawers by adding some mid-century drawer pulls from Home Depot that were a $1.38 a pop. To make sure they were even, I put my army of Post-its to work by measuring into the middle of each top drawer and then lining the markings down from there.
The paint and pulls alone already added a lot of personality to the piece!
Things really went up a level, though, when my O'verlays arrived! I picked the large Greek key design to match my Jonathan Adler for JCP greek key bedding but be a little larger to balance the fact that most of the prints I have going on in the bedroom are small. I loved that you can shop by piece on the O'verlays website so I knew my selections would fit the Malm. The design I wanted even came in two thicknesses, so I could decide if I wanted it to be a more subtle design or really pop off the dresser. To apply the O'verlays, I just centered each design over my drawer and applied it with Liquid Nails. I wanted to be pretty liberal with the adhesive and press them firmly onto the drawer, so I had a wet paper towel nearby to immediately wipe up any excess if it came out the side as we were pressing them on.
After they were dry, I went over the new design with another coat of the white semi-gloss paint to match everything together. I l-o-v-e- how the dresser turned out! I might be so bold to say it has a real shot at replacing my vintage piece for all time favorite place to store my clothes (besides all over the floor, naturally). Aren't these babies so fun?! So to recap: Good news - waiting for our baby!Bad news - vintage dresser and I are on a break Great news - Thanks to O'verlays, IKEA hacking is a blastEven better news - All Pancakes and Beet Juice readers get 15% off at myoverlays.com with the code PANCAKE15 now through October 29! When the stars align they really work out for ya, because I also just got an email that the extremely nice co-founder of O'verlays (I emailed her to thank her for making such a fun product and she was so nice and offered the coupon code to you all!) will be in Dallas next month leading a how-to workshop benefitting Dwell with Dignity! Everyone gets to make a 12x12" mirror and dress it up using O'verlays, and I will be there will my bells on ready to learn from the best herself.
