Today marks the 50th anniversary of the March On Washington For Jobs And Freedom.  Although, you probably know it better as the rally at which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.

I’d like to say we’ve come a long way in the past fifty years, and in many ways we have, but we still have a long way to go.

I could go on about how equality goes beyond skin color.  True equality is blind to religion, gender, ideology…and I’ll stop myself there.  For now, let’s celebrate how far we’ve come.

Dr. King said it first, and better than I can, so I’ll leave it to the professional.

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.”

~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
