Much to the joy of Disney fans everywhere, The Little Mermaid is being re-released into theaters this week. Much to the disappointment of those same fans, Disney is inviting moviegoers to bring their tablets along.
It’s a part of their Second Screen Experience, and while The Little Mermaid is not their first violation, but it is my favorite so I’m going to complain about it.
Really Disney? Did you miss the announcement at the beginning of the film? We’re you too busy texting?
The free app allows viewers to interact with the film, play games, and compete with others movie goers. This is how ADD is born.
Call me crazy, but when I go to see a movie I’m generally going to see the movie.
I don’t doubt that the app is brilliant and beautiful and everything we’ve come to expect from Disney. I just doubt that it won’t distract the viewers there to watch the movie and not the dozens of other glowing screens now being permitted into the auditorium.
I don’t think Ariel had this in mind when she mused about joining the human race. Do yourself a favor girl, and stay under the sea.
