…Hear the People Sing

…Hear the People SingAs we make our way though this week leading up to the Tonys, I thought I would take a look back. Not to the Tony Awards of yesteryear, but a bit further.

On this day in 1832, a short-lived uprising broke out in the streets of Paris. If you’re wondering what this has to do with the Tonys, I’m getting there.

A reminder of The French Revolution and a hint of things to come, this small rebellion only lasted two days.

Too small to be a true revolution, this minor disturbance may have been forgotten were it not for a novel that sparked a different kind of revolution over 100 year’s later.I’m speaking of course of that musical you either love or love to hate — Les Miserables.

Is it a mere coincidence that the event on which it’s based happens to fall in the middle of Tony week? Yes, of course it is.

It does provide the perfect opportunity/excuse to revisit this powerful story, one that lives on thanks to Victor Hugo, Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and the countless devoted fans.

It’s also a reminder of the power of storytelling, which is what Tonys week is about. Without storytellers, moments like this could be lost to history.
