If you awoke this morning with an extra bounce in your step, a certain glint in your eye. You might be a theater fan. After all, it’s Tony Sunday!
For those of you who are about to walk away, and will instinctively change the channel if you should find yourself on CBS come Tony time, we ask that you just give us a minute (or two) of your time.
First of all, Bradley Cooper. We hate to play so easy of a card, but we have your attention now, don’t we? Yes, Mr. Cooper is nominated for his performance in “Elephant Man” and will/should win, if you’re asking us.
Bradley Cooper isn’t just a great actor, he’s also a bridge (the metaphorical kind). For those of you who think you don’t like theater, you like movies, right? (If you said no to that, just get out now.)
If the movies aren’t quite your cup of tea, you like television, right? If you said no to that, we know you’re just trying to be difficult, because we (the theater) also have Jim Parsons (yes, Sheldon Cooper). He’s currently staring on Broadway in “An Act of God.”
If your dislike of theater comes from a dislike of musical theater, well then:
Really, if you tell us that you don’t like theater, we won’t believe you…There’s something for everyone, and the Tony Awards are a celebration of that. So, without further ado, here are our predictions:
Best Musical:
Zer- This could go one of two ways — “Fun Home” or “An American in Paris.” I’m inclined to go with the new original musical (“Fun Home”), but I’m also a sucker for a classic musical with some amazing dancing…so, I’ll go with an “American in Paris,” but I’m okay if I’m wrong.
Stephanie- “An American in Paris” (totally prepared for “Fun Home” to win this one too though, sorry I’m hedging my bets a bit here)
Best Play:
Zer- “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”
Stephanie- “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”
Best Revival of a Musical:
Zer- This is always a tough one, and there are a lot of strong contenders. However, at the end of the day, it’s hard to beat a well done Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, so I’m going with “The King and I.”
Stephanie- “On the Town” (Although it wouldn’t shock me if “The King and I” won…and I still don’t understand why there are only three nominees in this category.)
Best Revival of a Play:
Zer- I know “The Elephant Man” got a lot of praise for Bradley Cooper’s performance, and he’s got a shot at winning a Tony for himself (assuming Broadway’s gotten its Hollywood-sized chip off its shoulder), but I have to go with “Skylight.”
Stephanie- “Skylight” (I think the combined power of Carey Mulligan and Billy Nighy will probably grab this one, but I fully expect Bradley Cooper to win for “Elephant Man.”)
