Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm

Posted on the 29 October 2012 by Jillofalltrades @JillDeTrabajos
First of all, I need to get better about reading the news.  Know how I found out about Hurricane Sandy?  Saturday morning I was on the phone with my mom, and she was like "your grandparents in Pennsylvania are of course worried about the hurricane that's coming" and I was all "hurricane, really?" and she was like "yeah, wouldn't that affect you too?" and I was like "I doubt it, or I'd have heard about it by now."
I should learn that when you don't actually read the news all that regularly, you can't expect to just...hear about things.
I put it out of my mind, but then later at work the manager said "if we have to close on Monday because of the hurricane I'll let you guys know" and I totally interrupted the meeting to be like "Wait, really?  Uh....guys?  I'm from the west coast.  Hurricanes are scary.  What's going to happen???"
I'm pretty freaked out.
I live in upstate NY right along the Mohawk River (I'm talking, there's my house, there's a yard, there's a small bit of grass, then there's a cliff).  Last year during Irene the whole neighborhood flooded, like several feet.  Here's a picture:
Hurricane Sandy/Frankenstorm
We might even be forced to evacuate, if there's any flash flooding or whatever.  There's also been a flood watch, a high wind warning, and something called a "special weather statement" issued for the area.
I've been spending the morning filling pots with fresh water, setting out candles with matches by them, gathering important papers, charging all my electronics, and reading articles on how to prepare for disasters.  Oh, and biting my nails.
To add even more to the stress, Tyler had to go to work today and will be driving home around midnight, through dark country roads.  The worst of the storm will probably hit us around 1 or 2 am, is what I'm hearing, so he'll probably make it home before that happens, but I'll admit it: I'm super-fretting.  He's an excellent and responsible driver, and I know he'll drive slowly and safely and even stop if he needs to, but I'm still super nervous.
There's also a chance that if it's really bad when he's supposed to leave, they'll actually keep him there and won't let him go home.  Which is freaky, half because I'm worried about his safety, and half because I very selfishly don't want to hide from a storm by myself.
Any of my readers going to be affected (or already affected) by the hurricane?  I can think of a few that might be!  If you want to comment (or message me) and let me know how you're doing, feel free.  I don't know about anyone else, but for me, talking about it is super helpful.
Stay safe, and if you're not going to be affected by the storm, go do something we can't do!  Like go buy canned food free of long lines and crazy people!
