I Heart Dinosaurs

Posted on the 14 June 2013 by Rarasaur @rarasaur

I don’t know if you noticed, but I love dinosaurs. I love the greatness of them, the legend, the mystery– I love the vibrant colors and the keen eyes. I love the idea of a world inhabited by creatures larger than houses and more varied than birds.

The fabulous Lexi over at TheLifeBus just asked for details on my dinosaur fascination, so details you shall have– with pictures!

Let’s start at the beginning.

We all have a dinosaur deep within us just trying to get out.
- Colin Mochrie

When I was little, I would color light pink rose petals with markers– turning them a strange shade of green.  I would fill baskets and tell people they were dinosaur scales.

Dino scales are lucky.

Dino scales are lucky.

I’m always happiest when with my dinosaur toys.

I called him Donald.

I called him Donald.

If I have to choose between a normal product, and a product with dinosaurs on them, I pick the dinosaur version.

But who wouldn’t?

Why would you want a regular ring when this dino ring was available?

I pin dinosaurs to my Pinterest boards (http://pinterest.com/rarasaur/rawr/), I take dinosaur pictures and put them on Instagram (http://instagram.com/rarasaur), and I’ve made a dinosaur robot or two. Or twenty-two.

We make regular trips to the Natural History Museum to see the skeletons of the Great Lizards who once were.

GRAWRRRRRRRRRR!

GRAWRRRRRRRRRR!

I check out library books about dinosaurs and have Google alerts set up to notify me of any new discoveries– and all that information is filed in my brain and passed on to nephews, nieces, godchildren and friends.  They always draw dinosaurs for me, and their dinosaurs are the best I’ve ever seen because they aren’t based on science or bones or stories.  They’re based on the imaginations of children who were raised believing in the awesomeness of these beasts.

I asked Nephew #3 what kind of dinosaur this is. He said it was a cheesaurus. I asked what kind of dinosaur a cheesaurus is, and he said,

I asked Nephew #3 what kind of dinosaur this is. He said it was a gricheesaurus. I asked what kind of dinosaur a gricheesaurus is, and he said, “The kind that used to make grilled cheese.” Well played, Nephew #3. Well played.

Of course, it’s not just the kids who make dino-stuff for me.  Dave made this magic happen for me, in support of my blogging endeavors.  He’s a pretty amazing husband.

Rawr!!

Dinosaurs come up in casual conversation more often than you’d think!

For example:

  • When you want to discuss all the various plants that are surprisingly edible
  • When you want to talk about the lies our teachers spread to us
  • When I call my brother a colepiocephale, because that’s dinosaur for “knucklehead”.
Just me and my husband.

Just me and my husband.  I don’t actually have this outfit, but I’m pretty sure I could rock it if I did.

So yes. I love dinosaurs. Like Misha would say, they’re my totem.

Do you have a totem?
Do you heart dinos, too?
