Me: nothing, we are going to put in practice Il dolce far niente

My German bf (a bit nervous): really?  We are going to do nothing?

Me: yeah it will be fun! You are going to love it! Don’t tell me that you have never stayed at home for a weekend doing nothing (me thinking on my head: is that possible?)

My German bf (more nervous and doubtf): well… not really....

Me (with huge smile): Then, there is always a first time for everything!

 So how do you teach a German Il dolce far niente?

I love this phrase: Il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing)... I may not be 100% Italian but I know a lot about this sweet saying... I love to have the opportunity to relax to just do nothing and enjoy life as it is.

This is an art of enjoying the pleasure of having a break without feeling guilty about it of course. This is the pleasure of really enjoying a glass of wine and a sugary sweet you love, or it is simply contemplating an old photo album and smiling for the memories of old times. It is listening to your favorite artist or lying on your bed doing nothing. It is taking a nap in the middle of the day or stearing at the window watching people pass by or just watching the stars… Or it is simply kissing someone as if it were the first time… And of course it is about forgetting about time, work and responsibilities... It is about enjoying the little things in life that at the end are the ones that count. Il dolce far niente is an art that allows us to enjoy the present moment as the wonderful gift that it is. 

Then going back to my initial question: How do you teach a rational active German Il dolce far niente? You just lock him up for a weekend at your house and little by little Il dolce far niente within him comes out… because we all know deep inside that there is beauty in doing nothing at all! That was basically my mission last weekend and even if he has not mentioned how much he enjoyed it, his smile on Monday said it all!

Ah, how beautiful it is:  Il dolce far niente!

Mi novio alemán: ¿Qué vamos hacer este finde?

Yo: nada, ¿qué tal si practicamos il dolce far niente?

Mi novio alemán (un poco nervioso): ¿de verdad? ¿No vamos a hacer algo?

Yo: si dale ¡será divertido! Pienso que te encantará. No me digas que nunca te has quedado en casa un finde haciendo nada (yo pensando en mi cabeza: ¿es eso posible?)

Mi novio alemán (más nervioso y dudoso): hmmm… la verdad no…

Yo (con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja): ¡Súper, siempre hay una primera vez para todo!

Entonces, ¿cómo le enseñas a un alemán il dolce far niente?

Yo adoro esta frase: Il dolce far niente (el placer de no hacer nada)…  A lo mejor no soy 100% Italiana pero sí que sé mucho de este dicho… A mí me encanta el tener la oportunidad de relajarme y no hacer nada y disfrutar la vida como es.

Esto es el arte de disfrutar un descanso sin sentirse culpable por eso. Esto es el placer de disfrutar una copa de vino y un postre delicioso o el simple hecho de contemplar un álbum de fotos y sonreír por las memorias de bellos momentos. Es escuchar música de tu artista favorito o el recostarte en tu cama haciendo nada. El tomar una siesta en la mitad del día o el ver pasar gente desde tu balcón o el observar las estrellas… O simplemente el besar a alguien como si fuera la primera vez…  Y por supuesto es sobre todo olvidarse del tiempo, del trabajo y las responsabilidades… Es disfrutar las pequeñas cosas de la vida que al final del día son las que verdaderamente cuentan. Il dolce far niente es un arte que nos da la oportunidad de disfrutar el presente como el regalo hermoso que es.

Entonces si volvemos a mi pregunta inicial: ¿cómo le enseñas a un racional, activo alemán Il dolce far niente? Sólo lo encierras un rato en casa y dejas que poco a poco salgo solito porque todos sabemos  muy adentro de nosotros que hay una gran belleza ¡en el no hacer nada! Esa fue básicamente mi misión el fin de semana pasado y aunque él no ha mencionado aún cuanto lo disfrutó, su sonrisa el lunes lo dijo todo!
