…Illuminate

…IlluminateYesterday, January 1, 2012; marked the beginning of the end for one of the greatest scientific inventions of the 19th century.

With the ringing in of 2012, came the end of the road for the 100-watt incandescent light bulb.  Starting yesterday, these out-dated illuminators will no longer be manufactured or imported by the United States.

For those of you thinking this change is drastic and too sudden, let’s do some quick math.

The incandescent bulb we all know and love was introduced in 1879.  The law mandating their phase out was signed in 2007, and begins in 2012.  That means it has taken, roughly, 132 years to just begin their phasing out process (75-watt goes in 2013; and  the 40 and 60-watt follow in 2014).

Considering we live in a world where the latest iProduct is phased out every few weeks (it seems); it’s about time we update our main artificial light source.

So, for the new year, why not embrace the change and also expand your energy-efficiency vocabulary (LED- light-emitting diodes, and CFL-compact fluorescent lamps).

Or I suppose you could start hourding incandescent light bulbs.  It’s up to you.
