Today may be the first day of March, but for movie lovers it might as well be May.
Today kicks off the newly redefined “summer” blockbuster season. If you don’t believe me, then take a look at the box office line up through the end of the month.
This weekend “Jack the Giant Slayer” kicks off the season. Next weekend, the star packed “Wizard of Oz” prequel “Oz the Great and Powerful” hits theaters. And after that there’s still DreamWorks Animation’s “The Croods”,”G.I. Joe Retaliation” and “The Host” (Stephenie Meyer’s followup to “Twilight”)…and that’s only through the end of March (and depends on how strict your definition of “blockbuster” is).
Of course, this isn’t the first year that Hollywood pushed up its blockbuster season. Last March saw the release of “The Hunger Games”, “John Carter”, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” and “Wrath of the Titans.”
True, these pre-summer blockbusters may not be the same caliber as the summer blockbusters to follow (with some exceptions), but after a long awards season they’re the perfect palate cleanser.
So bring on the explosions, action sequences and CG animation. We’re ready.
