“So, I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you.” - Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

“If you ever want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.” – Cicily, SweetCicily.blogspot.com

My husband is an amazing man. Not only does he have the patience of a saint, putting up with the fact that my career forces us to pick up and move on a regular basis, knowing that his career unfortunately has to take a backseat, and just plain putting up with me in general, but he’s incredibly kind, good-humored, and unflappable to say the least. Friends ask me how I managed to find such an awesome guy to love {okay, to love like crazy}. Friends, I ask myself the same question.

I’m convinced it was all just the happiest of accidents. The universe conspired to bring me to this wonderful man and the funniest part is that we met when I’d decided to stop looking. For those of you who don’t know, this isn’t my first marriage – I was married and divorced in rapid succession when I was very young, and after that, dated a long string of losers. For that, I thank the belief that somehow took root in me after my divorce that I just didn’t deserve a good man, that he wouldn’t understand how to deal with me, that I wasn’t worthy of something wonderful. When I met my husband, I started to believe in something wonderful again. Now I believe like crazy.

We all have plans for how we think life should pan out. What we want our home and family life to be like, where our careers will take us, what we want to be when we grow up. And then, suddenly, when we think we’re heading in that direction, everything changes. Someone tilts the kaleidoscope and there we go. It might be completely at odds with the meticulous planner and go-getter in me, but I’ve learned to trust those turns of the kaleidoscope. They often show me pictures of such amazing beauty, things I never would have discovered if I’d followed my original plan, that I don’t fight them anymore – I just hang on and enjoy the ride.
