It is a truth universally acknowledged, that in a summer full of reboots, revivals, and sequels, they won’t all be gems.
“Jason Bourne,” in spite of the strength of its predecessors, falls short, but not in a completely in unentertaining fashion. But, I’ll spare you the qualifiers and spell it out.
The latest Bourne movie finds Jason Bourne 10 years after his latest adventure (seems appropriate) still living off-grid, and still being sought by the CIA. He’s apparently been doing a pretty good job of avoiding them until Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) draws him out of hiding with new information regarding Operation Treadstone.
The Agency’s latest ingenue, Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), along with CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones), of course spot Bourne the moment he makes contact with Parsons.
What follows is perfectly entertaining (and mixed with apparently some very odd tech), with some allusions to the dangers of social networking thrown in there and the loss of one of my favorite characters (I won’t tell you which one), and enough high-speed chases to last you the rest of the summer.
This movie isn’t bad, so much as it’s unnecessary. I for one will choose to hold onto the original trilogy (and even the more recent “Bourne Legacy“) and pretend this one didn’t happen.
But the good news is, if this international adventure doesn’t float your boat, there’s another kicking off today. Yes, the Olympic Opening Ceremonies are mere moments away (as I write this), and you should definitely tune in.
