It’s hard to put into words the tragedy of yesterday’s events at the Boston Marathon.
As a runner, I can’t help but look at it from the marathoners’ perspective.
I’ve never run a full marathon. However, I have run two half-marathons, participated in several long distance runs and cheered on the Chicago marathon.
The sense of community, support, and peace is like nothing else you will never experience. Yes, it’s a race, but for most of the participants who won’t be taking home the top prizes, the marathon is the victory lap.
You’ve put in the blood, sweat, and tears and now you get to enjoy the results of your hard work with thousands of your fellow runners. There’s a sense of camaraderie not competition. Everyone is cheering for everyone else.
That someone would attack an event full of that much goodwill, is beyond comprehension. Imposing that amount of anger and hatred on the marathon, there’s few words that can describe that kind of evil.
We can only hope that this individual or group will not have a lasting impact on the marathon and larger running world. To lose that trust and sense of community would be truly tragic.
…2WC’s thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this tragedy.
