…Let Your Heart Be Light

It’s a 2WC Christmas!  Reflecting on our favorite Christmas movie, each of the Crusaders wishes you a Merry Christmas in true 2WC style.

Zer:  Say what you will about “Meet Me In St. Louis,” not being a Christmas movie, but it’s about family and home.  Throw in some Judy Garland (in her prime), and what’s more Christmasy than that?

I could bore you with a stronger and more detailed argument, but it’s Christmas.  So, all I’ll say is, if you don’t believe me, watch it, and decide for yourself.

I will, however, also add that it’s the birthplace of one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” in its original state with all its wonderful melancholy and a touch of holiday cheer.  We are reminded that the goodtimes come to us courtesy of the not so good times.

On that note, may your Christmas be filled with every happiness, friends and family.  Merry Christmas!

Stephanie: When I praise this movie it’s often assumed that my love for this important piece of cinema history comes purely from its setting, which happens to be the 2WC’s hometown.  I assure you that while there is some truth to that, there’s so much more to this Christmas (and year-round) gem.

Yes, it takes place in St. Louis, Missouri, in the year before the 1904 World’s Fair (Louisiana Purchase Exposition), but that’s not what it’s about.  It’s about a year in the life of a family–the things that change, the things that stay the same, and the bonds that cannot be broken.

Oh, and did I mention Judy Garland is in it? That and several numbers from the Great American Songbook. Including “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” a song that Esther (Garland) sings to her youngest sister Tootie (a very young Margaret O’Brien) on a very early Christmas morning.

The relationship Esther and Tootie is simply heartwarming. They fight, they tease, but at the end of the film Esther would stay up on Christmas Eve to make her baby sister feel better, and possibly help her dig up all of her dead dolls. And that is family, and why this movie is at the end of our Christmas countdown.

With that, 2WC wishes you and yours a merry little Christmas.
