…lighten Your Purse

…lighten your purse

If anyone out there enjoys worrying about how out of touch some of our politicians are with the realities of everyday life in this country I have good news: several of them are proposing that we help with the national debt by replacing the paper $1 bill with a coin…again.

Apparently this shift would save $13.8 billion over the next 30 years. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal on paper…unfortunately the practicality of it does not match up.

I understand that economically speaking coins make more sense than paper money, but something tells me the people making these decisions don’t have to actually deal with either.

I’ll give the lawmakers some credit, off the top of my head I can only think of one huge reason why no one who ever has to actually every handle money will go for this idea: coins are loud and heavy…so maybe that’s two.

It’s petty, and probably insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but fumbling through your change purse sucks. Imagine how much worse it would be if we suddenly had to do so not simply for pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters (not to mention half dollars and the already existing dollar coins), but for dollars too…it would make those of us who insist on counting out 95 cents in pennies so much worse, and those of us who only have ones not much better.

No one over the age of 8 is excited to see a dollar coin…they just aren’t.

And, while we’re worrying about the economy of our currency, has anyone taken a look at the penny lately?
