And with that, I’ve exhausted my five years of French. Wait, “Pierre est à la piscine.” Okay, now I’m good. Apologies to any native French speakers.
For those who don’t speak French, please feel free to marvel at my brilliant bilingual skills. And happy Bastille Day!
It’s the one day of the year where some get to pretend to appreciate French culture, and the rest of us get to show off our random French knowledge.
For example: the literal translation of the infamous, “Let them eat cake,” is actually, “Let them eat brioche (bread).” Plus, there’s some debate over whether or not Marie Antoinette ever even uttered that phrase.
Whether it’s cake or bread, it is still Bastille Day. So break out your beret, grab a baguette and maybe a few other stereotypes. And celebrate France, even if it’s only for a day.
