Whether you’ve seen it yet or not, odds are you’ve heard a lot about the comic book movie juggernaut, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Most of what you’ve heard probably isn’t great, and if you’ve seen it, you know that it’s earned every single one of the negative comments on the confusing plot, and character motivations, as well as a few other horrific blunders. However, you may have missed one of the most obvious problems with the film — casting media personalities as themselves.
Let me start my rant by saying that I’m by no means a DC Comics purist. I know the general plots of the main heroes (ie – Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman); but I don’t consider myself an expert.
That being said, I do know that Anderson Cooper, Nancy Grace, Soledad O’Brien, Charlie Rose, and Neil deGrasse Tyson don’t exist in DC land. Yet somehow they popped up in “Batman v Superman.” It’s weird.
It’s also made exceptionally awkward when you consider that Clark Kent and Lois Lane are both reporters whose screen time gets seriously cut into by the real world media’s intrusion. There’s already enough of a mess with the whole alien vs. vigilante billionaire, we don’t need the fictional and the real world media at each others throats, too.
I can’t blame the personalities themselves. I for one would find it hard to turn down a roll in a blockbuster comic book film, however horribly out-of-place that roll might be. I can blame Warner Brothers though, who not so subtly seemed to pick personalities who they have a vested interest in. Meaning I have to question their motivation for including them in the film at all.
To put it simply, it’s not needed. It detracts from the film, and pulls the audience out of the fictional worlds of Gotham and Metropolis. We already have plenty to question in this messy, messy film, don’t give us another reason to mentally check out.
