My Mother Wears Army Boots

Before I talk about anything else today, I just have to show you how kickass my mother is.

This is my mom. She’s a college professor, the published author of several textbooks and articles on clinical psychology and bioscience, and an awesome mom. She bakes great cookies, gives hugs when needed, and is always there when you just need to phone home and vent. She shoots 40 for 40 on the Army marksmanship range and this week she’s out at Quantico, observing and probably taking part in the Marine officer basic course that’s going on right now.

Mom has been involved as a civilian educator with both Army and Marine ROTC programs at her university for some time now. She helps the military instructors liaise with the university and navigate all the regulations and red tape of the university system. She started working with them when I went to West Point – she wanted to find out more about what kind of work I was getting into without bugging or hovering over me, so she knocked on the door of the Army ROTC program and made friends! Since that time, she’s really enjoyed the environment and the people, so she’s kept working with them.

Since she’s so close to me {okay, compared to our usual distances, 100 miles between Fort Lee and Quantico is close!}, I was able to drive up and catch dinner with her last night. We didn’t get any more gourmet than Cracker Barrel, so no, that doesn’t count as a Recipe or Restauranting post for this week, but we spent a couple of quality hours together over good food and lots of coffee, talking about life, the universe, and everything, so I count it as a top notch meal. I’m incredibly grateful to have such a wonderful, strong role model and such a wonderful friend in my mom, and just wanted to give her a special shout out today!

Happy training, Mom!
