NaNoWriMo Prep November 2012

NaNoWriMo Prep November 2012 Here we are again. It's almost NaNoWriMo time, and this time things are getting serious!!
Regular readers might remember that I attempted to participate in both of this summer's Camp NaNoWriMo's, and both didn't fare so well. It's interesting, because after talking to a few writers, it seems that most people appear to struggle with completing Camp NaNoWriMo, whilst they find it a lot more easy to push themselves throughout November.
Maybe it's because summer is a time when most of us are wanting to be outside and doing stuff, whilst winter is a time when sitting huddled in front of a heater indoors is actually incredibly appealing. Or perhaps it's just because so many more people choose to do it during November, I don't know.
What I do know is that there always seems to be a much stronger support base during November, probably because more people get involved so everyone is together to support each other. During both Camp NaNoWriMo's this year, I was doing it on my own, not knowing many who had chosen to take part and those who did dropped out fairly quickly.

Motivation

The whole thing kind of raises the question about motivation: how many of us can truly motivate ourselves to complete a novel? Are we more likely to succeed if we have the help of others in terms of motivation? It's an interesting question, and it'll be even more interesting to discover how successful next month's NaNoWriMo will be.
Even more interesting is the fact that I'm already two weekends down for the month of November, with a weekend in Edinburgh planned and the following weekend is my birthday, which I am also going away for. Normally, I'd be worried, but I'm not. I actually went to Sheffield and London in the first week of NaNoWriMo in November 2011, and I still managed to complete the month. Plus, the planning is coming along nicely for my story, so I am feeling confident.
I'm actually really happy with the story that I'm going to be working on, purely because it is completely different to what I'd normally write, and I am really looking forward to the challenge!
