New York Bucket List

NYSOM

I just came from a post forum with some of my soon-to-be-graduating seniors where we talked about where they wanted to go for their first assignment, and I gave them the same thing to think about that I’ve been saying all over the place here as of late:

This is your life. Do the things you love.

I used to think that the most important ingredients to being happy with your job were 1) choosing a job you liked and 2) choosing a location that you liked. I forgot the third one, and that’s 3) choose as many things to like about wherever you end up as you can. Because chances are, there’s plenty to like. Okay, so that’s easy in New York because there’s so much everything, but part of experiencing that everything is making the conscious decision to do so!

Part of my 101 in 1001 is to figure out everything that the hubby and I want to do in New York before we have to leave this summer, to make a conscious decision to enjoy every last bit of it before we have to leave. So here’s the list of things we want to do in the 150 or so days we have left in New York.

Our New York Bucket List

  1. See one more Broadway play and get one more playbill for the Broadway souvenir binder {candidates are Spiderman, The Book of Mormon, Cinderella, and Nice Work (If You Can Get It)}.
  2. Take a carriage ride in Central Park.
  3. Go to the Central Park Zoo and Belvedere Castle.
  4. See/tour Ellis Island.
  5. See the USS Intrepid and Enterprise Shuttle display.
  6. Attend an event at NYC Fashion Week this spring.
  7. Go skiing at one of our local hills.
  8. Visit and tour a historic home.
  9. Visit the Bronx Zoo.
  10. Visit the Botanical Gardens.
  11. New York Motorcycle Show.
  12. New York Auto Show. MUST do!
  13. Visit the Hamptons for a weekend.
  14. Go wine tasting along the wine trail.
  15. Visit the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
  16. Visit Coney Island and walk the Boardwalk.
  17. Get a cupcake at Magnolia bakery. Just because.
  18. Eat a pastry outside Tiffany’s. Just because.
  19. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge.
  20. Hike part of the Appalachian Trail.
  21. See a show at the Lincoln Center.
  22. Bike the Bronx River Parkway when it closes on a Sunday.
  23. Climb all over the new climbing gym at the Palisades Mall.
  24. Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.
  25. Walkabout day in SoHo.

I’m always sad to leave a place I love {and I  New York}, but it’s also fun and exciting to become a bit of a tourist in a place you think you know. I do this kind of a list every time I leave a place and I always discover fun new things. I’m looking forward to the surprises and experiences the next few months will bring, and learning to love New York in new ways.

Do you have a must-do list for your own home town? what would you list as must-do activities?

:) KCS
