It’s the calm before the storm for baseball fans.

So, in an attempt to keep mine and my fellow Cardinal fans’ minds off of the impending stress-ball hurtling closer and closer with every passing moment, I thought I’d focus on a cataclysmic event of a different nature — asteroids.

Not surprisingly, it turns out that we, as a planet, do not have a plan for protecting ourselves from one of these rogue meteors should they set their sights on us.  Or at least we don’t have a plan that anyone is willing to admit to…those can’t all be broadcasting satellites.

Thankfully, the United Nations is working to correct that problem (and has way too much free time on their hands).

The UN voted last week to adopt a proposal to form an “International Asteroid Warning Group.”  Despite it’s title, the group will actually work on developing a plan of action for defending our planet against asteroids…not just shouting “Look Out!”.

If you’re questioning just how important a committee such as this one is, well then you may be surprised to know that there’s a one in 63,000 chance that an asteroid with a diameter of 400 meters will hit us in 2032.

So, that should give them plenty of time.  If they’re looking for a starting point, might I suggest meeting up with those physicists who “accidentally” invented the light saber.
