…play with the hand you’ve been dealt

This Monday, motivation is at hand (the left one to be more specific) as we celebrate the southpaws among us for National Left-Handers Day.

To me, a right-handed individual, the value of today isn't just about apologizing to the left-handed among us who must make their way through a world made for the right-handed and ambidextrous (and we are sorry about that). It's also about appreciating those traits that make us different.

And left-handed people, your left-handedness is an important part of who you are. Don't forget that and be proud. Don't apologize for switching seats so you don't have your elbow in their paperwork or meal. Own it. It's who you are. Kind. Considerate. And left-handed.

For the rest of us, it's a reminder that different isn't inherently bad, it's just different. Not that we have a history of ostracizing and villainizing things outside the "norm," but "awkward" and "dubious" are both still listed as synonyms for left-handed. Seriously.

Not to mention, you're in great company. Some of the most brilliant people throughout history have been lefties...Aristotle, Mozart, Mark Twain, Marie Curie, and Oprah...to name a few.

And frankly, it shouldn't matter. Whether we're on the left or right of this divide (or perhaps others), remember that both sides are people.

May we all find the motivation to embrace those traits that make us who we are, no matter how different they may be.

...bi-daily smile...
