Yesterday, the world watched as one of the most iconic, historic, and beloved pieces of architecture was destroyed. Hymns were sung, tears were shed, and history was mourned as the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris was engulfed in flames.
As nearly a thousand years of history burned before us on television, social media, and smartphones spanning the globe, one thing was quite clear, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris holds a special place in the hearts of its city, its country, and the world.
The Cathedral may be Catholic, but it has a place in the global culture that goes well beyond religion and has inspired and touched countless individuals through the centuries. Of course, what was lost will be rebuilt and this will become another chapter in this (so much more than a) building's storied history. But I know that's little comfort for the loss that is so deeply felt today.
Perhaps we can find some solace in the fact that the loss is felt so deeply, by so many, and in turn, do our best to ensure that love of culture and history continues to live on through the stories we share.
