One of my hobbies is discovering all forms of destiny and personality analyses. I grew up in a world that considered many of these types of quizzes and readings to be normal, so it’s rare when I stumble upon one I’ve never even heard of before.
Still, it wasn’t too long ago when I discovered the concept of “birth cards”.
A friend and I were shopping at a local mall, and we saw a display of playing-card-themed birthday cards. The sign proclaimed that each day of the year has an assigned playing card which indicates personality traits.
I was mesmerized. We read a bit about the history– which seemed to be quite involved– and I looked over at my friend and hazarded a guess.
“I bet I’m the Queen of Hearts”, I said.
I had mixed feelings about my sense that the Queen of Hearts was my card. On the one hand, it seems like a pompous card to choose on a whim, like when people say that they were Alexander the Great, or Abraham Lincoln, or Florence Nightingale in a past life. On the other hand, there’s only 52 cards. The odds are pretty high that someone is a queen of something. Plus, I didn’t mean it in a good or bad way, it just struck me as correct. There are plenty of cool sounding cards. Off the top of my head, I’d like 15% of them more than Queen of Hearts.
As I was rambling, my friend was navigating the chart. A few minutes into my probability calculations, she looked up and smiled, “You guessed right.”
Sure enough. August 27th is the Queen of Hearts.
Since that moment, I’ve been a bit fascinated with the inner-workings of this system of destiny and personality reading. There’s many layers to it– karma cards, ruling cards, etc.
It’s fascinating, but I have to say the most appealing aspect is the fact that I guessed my card.
It’s like magic!
