Amazon is offering a helping hand to its fellow booksellers.
The Internet retail giant rolled out Amazon Source today, a new program that will allow independent booksellers to earn money from the sale of e-books.
It sounds nice, right?
Participating retailers can receive 10 percent of all revenue from Kindle e-books…and here comes the catch…purchased on Kindle devices sold by the store.
If you’re thinking that still sounds like an okay deal, then you’re right, but there’s still more. That’s 10 percent of all revenue for the first two years after a customer buys the device.
That’s like offering Blockbuster the opportunity to sell Netflix memberships at their stores (too soon?). Not only will it not delay the inevitable, it will speed the process up. Why would you tempt your most faithful followers with the convenience of the Kindle?
Amazon may be offering a helping hand to small businesses, but the other hand is busy tightening the rope.
