Happy Golden Globes Sunday!
The time has arrived for us to put forth our predictions. Hollywood’s biggest party will have a decidedly sterner tone than usual as actresses (and we expect most actors too) will take to the red carpet in black in recognition and support of #MeToo and #TimesUp.
While quickly scanning the nominees, the Golden Globes may not appear to have quite caught up with the need for broader representation (particularly in the director category), there are signs of hope.
Exhibit A: Nearly all of the “Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television” feature female-led stories (and “Fargo” is there too).
We know there are those out there that would ask, “Does it really matter?” Of course, it does. The stories we tell are a reflection of who we are, and we are multi-dimensional, we learn from the stories of others, and it’s time the stories that are honored did too.
So, here’s hoping that need for change is reflected in tonight’s winners and we all continue to look beyond our own experience for stories that inspire, delight, and help us all grow.
Now, on to the predictions.
Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical
Zer: “Lady Bird” — Believe the buzz. This sweet, simple story about the complexities of mother-daughter relationships is as good as you’ve heard it is. It’s funny too. Plus it’s two leading ladies, Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, are equally impressive.
Stephanie: “Lady Bird”— As someone attended an all-girl Catholic high school, it should come as no surprise that this movie spoke directly to my soul. While I find it incredibly disappointing that the Globes overlooked writer/director Greta Gerwig in the directing category (too many men to include, not enough room I suppose), I expect that this movie will sweep just about every category it’s included in tonight, and Oscar voters, you’re up next…no pressure.
Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical
Zer: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — This story about a newly single-ish woman trying to find her way in the world of New York standup is a revelation. Yes, there is a trend to a lot of this year’s nominated movies and series, and it’s about damn time. This brilliant show was created by a woman, the same one behind “Gilmore Girls,” and proves that women can be and are funny. They can also be stylish, smart, and have a phenomenal soundtrack. Also, expect the show’s star Rachel Brosnahan to take home a globe as well.
Stephanie: “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — This is absolutely no contest in my mind, although I wouldn’t blame them if they gave it to Black-ish, which has been especially on point this season. This year’s tone is clear and Mrs. Maisel is the hilarious, incredibly smart tonic.
Best Motion Picture – Drama
Zer: “The Shape of Water” — I would be thrilled if this went to Martin McDonagh’s, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” but my gut says Guillermo del Toro’s film will take this top prize. It’s gorgeous and romantic which makes it stand out amidst the politics, war, and violence of the other contenders in this category.
Stephanie: “The Shape of Water” — I expect the rest of this category will do fairly well throughout the night (Francis McDormand is incredible in “Three Billboards”), but this sci-fi phenomenon will likely go home with the top honor this evening. I also wouldn’t be stunned if “The Post” won, and would be overjoyed if “Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri” pulled a surprise win. But in these tenuous times, wouldn’t it be nice to see a touch of whimsy win the day?
Best Television Series – Drama
Zer: “The Handmaid’s Tale” — I hesitate to go against “Game of Thrones” in this category, but “The Handmaid’s Tale,” deserves this honor, and has the current political climate on its side. It also happens to be a beautiful show in every way, from its casting and performances to its costumes and cinematography.
Stephanie: “The Handmaid’s Tale” — I will be overjoyed if “The Crown” pulls an upset, but it’s hard to imagine another show taking this category tonight. This show is (unfortunately) a reminder of the times in which we live and a stern warning of what can happen when the rights of women and other marginalized populations are ignored. I only hope the trend continues to lead to change.
Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Zer: “Big Little Lies” — This big winner for HBO shouldn’t have any problems taking this category. From its powerhouse cast to its subject matter, it’s nearly impossible to beat.
Stephanie: “Big Little Lies” — First, I’d like to take a moment to applaud the lady representation in this category. Also if “Top of Lake: China Girl” wins I’ll be absolutely fine with that, but it’s hard to imagine anyone taking out the one-two punch (star power matched with gut-wrenching performances) that is “Big Little Lies.”
Best Animated Feature Film
Zer: “Coco” — Pixar. Pixar. Pixar. In other words, the Golden Globes love Pixar. While “Coco,” isn’t their best, I think it’s good enough to grab the globe tonight. If the world worked differently, “Loving Vincent,” would win for its gorgeous and original creation process, but expect “Coco” to take this category.
Stephanie: “Coco” — A part of me really wants to vote for “Boss Baby,” because it sticks out in a delightful avant-garde sort of way. However, I think Pixar will continue its streak, at least for the time being. I suspect they may secede the honor to “Loving Vincent” when it comes time for the Oscars, but for tonight is for Pixar.
