This past week, the Boston Red Sox were invited to the White House to celebrate their World Series Championship.
A seemingly harmless event (unless you’re a recovering Cardinals fan…I’m fine, really), on the surface, until the, now infamous, “Big Papi” and Obama selfie happened.
For those unfamiliar with the event, here’s what happened — David Ortiz took a selfie of himself and President Obama, and then tweeted the photo. Which seemed innocent enough, until the same photo showed up on Samsung’s Twitter account with the tweet, “This photo was taken with a #GalaxyNote3.”
Needless to say, the White House is not thrilled about the use of the Presidents image in an advertisement. For those who aren’t aware, that’s a big no-no. Also, the tweet has raised more than a few eyebrows over Big Papi’s involvement.
I won’t point fingers, but how exactly did Samsung know what type of phone Mr. Ortiz took the photo with? We may never know, especially now that lawyers are involved.
This innocent selfie could lead to some major changes in how we share photos on social media. After all, if Davis Ortiz genuinely did not have a deal with Samsung, what rights did they have to use his photo?
But more importantly, this would not have happened if the Cardinals had won the World Series (seriously, I’m over it).
