Okay fellow Olympic addicts, it’s Friday and the 2018 Winter Olympics have officially started! Yes, that’s right, as you were catching a few extra z’s and starting your day, the opening ceremony was happening.
But don’t worry, you’ll get another chance to show your Olympic spirit, and watch the opening ceremony, this evening. It may not be live, but it still counts. In the mean time, it’s time to get yourself ready for a flurry of unfamiliar sports.
If nothing else, the Winter Olympics are a testament to humankinds endless creativity when it comes to competition. Even in the world’s harshest environments they’ve come up with countless ways to compete on slippery, frozen surfaces.
This weekend’s events include everything from the biathlon to curling (aka: shooting on skis and shuffle board, on ice!). If that has you feeling a little overwhelmed, there are more familiar events like figure skating, speed skating, and hockey. And if you prefer your winter sports a little faster, there’s plenty of downhill sports from alpine skiing and ski jumping to the bobsled and luge.
Although, fair warning, no matter how mundane an event might appear on the surface (looking at you cross country skiing) they will all suck you in. If you’re not careful, you may find that you’re a freestyle skiing or short track speed skating junkie by Monday. So, pace yourself and enjoy the games!
