Well, folks, here we are, another Sunday, another opportunity for rest and a Funday moment, but first, let’s take a moment for the English language…
One of the wonderful things about all languages is that they are not stagnant, they change just as we do, to reflect societal changes. For English-speaking people, Shakespeare is famous for having added such terms as unreal, zany, jaded, besmirched, and also compromise to our vernacular.
But you don’t have to go that far back to find examples of the evolution of our language. Take the word selfie, for example, which wasn’t widely used until the early 2000s and didn’t make it into any dictionary until 2013. Our language is always changing.
But even with all of the changes that come with time, our language and all languages maintain certain standards that do not waver. You might call them, inarguable facts, which would, of course, be redundant because facts are by definition “indisputably the case,” but you still might alternatively call them that.
And today I find that vernacular consistency comforting because although context may change the implication, at their heart words never lose their meaning, and choosing the right ones will always be important.
