The world is feeling a little upsidedown and backwards right now. There's a lot of things going wrong, and there's a lot that needs to change. That being said, sometimes, in the midst of a storm it helps to take time to celebrate the victories.
Today's victory comes to us courtesy of the entertainment world. This week, the Academy announced their 2019 Oscar Nominees. While the Best Picture category was fairly predictable there was one film that stood out - "Black Panther."
It's not unusual to see Marvel movies nominated in the technical categories. However, a superhero film in the Best Picture category, well, I had my money on hell freezing over first.
Of course, "Black Panther" is more than just another superhero film. It's a break through in diversity and representation. It not only expanded the Marvel universe on-screen, it welcomed a whole new audience to see themselves in these heroes.
To have that value and importance recognized by the Academy, well that's huge. It's a reminder that no matter how bad it seems, some of us are still moving in the right direction.
