It seems the stereotype that Americans don’t watch football (as in soccer football), might not be as true as it once was. This past Monday, 15.9 million viewers tuned in for the U.S.’s World Cup match versus Ghana.
That’s an impressive number by itself, but even more so when you consider that game was played outside of prime time, and while a good number of Americans would usually be in the middle of their evening commute.
If you’re thinking that’s a pretty big number, but still can’t compare to America’s more populate athletic past times, you might be surprised.
Last week’s Stanley Cup final only drew in 6 million viewers (mostly because most of us thought it was already over). The NBA Finals game, had 17.9 million.
Numbers tend not to lie, and those two seem to suggest that Americans might be catching up with the rest of the world’s football obsession.
Okay, and it’s true that these kinds of numbers only exist when the U.S. is playing, but we have to start somewhere. Maybe this football / soccer game might catch on after all.
