If you’ve spent any time online or in the general vicinity of the Internet (which is everywhere) lately you’ve probably caught a glimpse of the latest YouTube meme: “The Harlem Shake.”
Joining the illustrious ranks of video memes that have come before it, such as the memorable “Call Me Maybe” dubs of the summer and the downright unforgettable “Gangnam Style” barrage (also of this summer), “The Harlem Shake” is everything you expect from a video meme and more.
I won’t bore you too much with the details, but the meme opens with a solo dancer wearing a helmet of some kind and then cuts to a roomful of randomly-attired fellow dancers. That’s pretty much it.
Riveting stuff, I know, and it has accordingly taken off and become an internet craze. So naturally, the FAA is now investigating one such meme that was recorded in-flight Jumping around and blocking the aisle at 30,000 feet, what could have possibly gone wrong?
The students involved say they cleared it with the flight attendants, and the airline says the fasten seat belt signs were not on when the video was recorded. I say that this incident (along with some suspended students, fired miners, and several other questionable incarnations) is the perfect opportunity to send this meme off into the sunset before anyone else gets hurt.
It was fun while it lasted, but you can only watch so many renditions (and the best one is below). Why don’t we take a breather guys and catch up on our cat videos? Remember those? It’s been a while.
