There are some recent reports that Twitter may be working towards getting rid of the retweet.
Don’t panic, they’re not doing away with the function, just the terminology.
Select mobile users have noticed that recent updates have replaced this word for the new era with, “share with others.” So, I suppose the plural noun version of that would be shared Tweets.
I know Twitter’s trying to make their service simpler for those new to tweeting, but the retweet ship has sailed. Changing it now would be like renaming the hashtag, “keyword,” it wouldn’t catch on.
Plus, there’s something nice about the simplicity of the retweet. It’s a noun and a verb, nice and simple.
The final thing I have to say on the matter is: I’ve been RT’ing since I had to manually add it to the front of my copied Tweet and then text it via 40404. I’d like to see them try to successfully eliminate the RT.
The people made the RT and only the people can take it away (metaphorically of course, the Twitter developers can in fact replace the term on the site).
