…Shush

…ShushAs we approach the end of National Library Week, I thought I’d spend some time focusing on one of the most common (but often overlooked) features of the library — the quiet.

Some like to poke fun at the eternal struggle of the librarian to maintain silence in their domain, but for those seeking a little quiet time the library is one of their few remaining sanctuaries.

Countless studies (and common sense) back up the benefits of a little quiet time, but it still seems so hard to come by with all the literal and metaphorical noise. From maintaining your sanity and peace of mind to renewed energy and developing new brain cells, there’s a myriad of reasons for why you should add some quiet time to your daily routine.

While you could certainly find your own quiet space outside of the library, one of the perks of this last refuge of the quiet seekers is that it comes with its own squadron of quiet-time enforcers. Meaning you don’t have to worry about telling people to pipe down or leave you alone, that’s what the librarians are there for.
