It’s that time of year again. No, not the holidays—movie award’s season!
Today kicked it off with the announcement of the 2017 Golden Globe nominees. While the Globes are by no means a carbon copy of the Oscar’s nominees, they do give an idea of at least some of the strong contenders for the year’s top film awards.
That being said, today I’m focusing on this year’s surprises. Yes, a lot of them won’t be walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards, but at least they’ll get to see the nominees at the Globes.
The first surprise is more of a disappointment. This year’s nominees for Best Motion Picture in the drama category features zero films with female leads. If you don’t believe me, compare the nominees for best actress in a drama with the films that were nominated. Spoiler alert: there’s zero crossover. Still, there is a bit of silver-lining as the comedy category features three films with lady leads…I suppose three out of ten is better than nothing.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was “Deadpool” which snagged a spot in the Musical or Comedy Film category as well as an acting nod for its lead, Ryan Reynolds. Actually, calling it a surprise doesn’t quite cover it. After all, “Deadpool” is a superhero movie, which get high ticket sales, not awards. Plus, there’s the matter of its lead, who’s made quite the superhero rebound from “Green Lantern.” Still, it’s a pleasant surprise, and one that will almost definitely not be repeated come Oscar season.
Okay, so it was a relatively shock free list of film nominees this year, which doesn’t bode well for Oscar season. But who knows, maybe this will be the year that the Oscars mix it up.
