Happy Cinco de Mayo!
If you’re thinking about celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day, today, you might want to think again…that’s celebrated on September 16th.
In fact, Cinco de Mayo isn’t even really celebrated in Mexico, except in the state if Puebla where it’s known as El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla). It’s observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
It’s also not what is celebrates by millions of Americans on Cinco de Mayo. The American Cinco de Mayo originated in Mexican-American communities in the 1860s, and eventually grew into the celebration it is today.
That may not be as exciting as Mexican Independence, but it’s still a pretty solid reason to have a margarita on a Monday night. Happy Cinco de Mayo!
