This week, as we near the close of National Ice Cream month, our nation turns its gaze to the flavor (or lack thereof, as some might argue) that started it all. Yes, it's National Vanilla Ice Cream Day.
Now, I know there are those out there who will mock anyone who claims this simple, palate cleanser as their favorite flavor. And, for the record, it is not at the top of my list (mint chocolate chip for life), but I do think this humble starting point for flavor building deserves some respect.
Sure, it may not have the mass appeal of chocolate or the pizzazz of pistachio or the sophistication of spumoni, but I ask you: Where would those flavors be without this baseline from which to build?
Vanilla is one-third of a banana split.
It's where all Blizzards begin.
And it's a flavor that goes with literally anything.
Seriously, name a flavor that would not be complemented by vanilla?
I think, as we reflect on the true meaning of vanilla, this National Vanilla Ice Cream Day, we could all take a lesson from this unassuming extract.
Take the time to be okay with not being the center of attention while finding ways to elevate those around us.

Speaking of humble and unassuming...
